Abstract: 

The article analyzes the development of community-state relations concerning law and justice in Guatemala since the early 1980s till our days. The traditional Mayan law and the current community justice in the country are described. The author concludes that social and organizational capacity of community institutions in general and the community justice, in particular, could be instrumental in recovering and developing the Guatemalian society and state.
