The article researches a criminal behaviour of cadets who study in universities of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia. The author wants to learn more about the motives of crimes committed by students. He uses the following methods: documentary (the study of materials of criminal cases and internal investigations), statistical (the analysis of a departmental reporting), sociological research (including the results of the survey on the prevalence of negative phenomena and crimes among students). The author provides the statistical data on delinquency in universities of the FPS of Russia and the penal system in general, and describes the main points of view on the motive of a crime. He also classifies cadets who commit crimes depending on the mechanism of their criminal behaviour and motives. There is a comparative analysis of the traditional motives of crimes in conflict situations and the motives which guide cadets. Based on the findings, some ways for improving the preventive work are suggested. The results of the study could be useful for training law enforcement officials and for prevention of crimes among university students. The author comes to the conclusion that the motives of crimes committed by cadets have significant differences with the overall motives of crimes and particularly among certain categories of cadets, and should be taken into account when conducting psychological selection, forming values and interests, providing psychological assistance, working with risk groups and educational collectives.
