Abstract: 

The author attempts to formulate a consolidated universal list of rules for the interpretation of criminal law provisions, which allows to avoid obtaining an a priori illegal result. It is proposed to divide contextual restrictions of interpretation into two groups: general and sectoral. The author reveals the content of the restrictions of each group, based on the provisions of normative legal acts, doctrine and judicial practice. The relevance of the study is confirmed by the indispensable presence in criminal law enforcement practice of an interpretative element, which, among other things, determines the legality or defectiveness of the adopted act.
