Abstract: 

The article examines the ideas about the social and legal progress of outstanding Russian pre-revolutionary jurists B. N. Chicherin and M. M. Kovalevsky. The author analyses the social and legal ideals, general and particular criteria for legal progress articulated by them, as well as their understanding of the prospects for the social and legal development of mankind. The advantages and disadvantages of their theories of social and legal progress are also revealed.
