The article covers the history, modern state and prospects of enquiry as a means of peaceful settlement of international disputes. The author outlines the place that the fact-finding procedure occupies in the system of peaceful settlement of disputes, systematizes and analyzes bilateral and multilateral treaties governing the organization and activity of international fact-finding commissions, and also reveals the factors that cause the rare practical application of enquiry for the settlement of disputes between states.
