The article substantiates the need to modernize legal education in the context of the formation of a knowledge society. The key challenges facing Russian society and the legal education system are identified. A set of problems associated with the training of legal personnel and the education of the legal community is revealed: extensive development of legal education; declining quality of teaching caused by the growing demand for legal education; insufficient funding of law schools; a value conflict between the emerging law enforcement practice and the legal education system; the formation of quasi-legal academic disciplines in the context of building an innovative economy and a period of social bifurcation; an emphasis not on qualitative but on quantitative indicators when assessing the effectiveness of law schools; insufficient justification for organizational and methodological changes, etc. The effective practices implemented at the Ural State Law University named after V. F. Yakovlev, aimed at the formation of traditional Russian spiritual and moral values, optimization of communication processes, preservation and enhancement of the heritage of the scientific school and improvement of the quality of the educational process are analyzed. Of particular importance is the fact that the results of the study can be used to solve similar problems in other educational organizations, since they have of a universal nature.
