«Forensic profiling» is currently considered a new (some called it advanced) way of solving a crime, which appeared in the XIX century, was developed in the XX century, but became widely known only in the XXI century. However, in our opinion, this statement is partly true. Our opinion is justified by the fact that certain elements of this method have already been used in the work of law enforcement agencies in certain countries much earlier and even found their reflection in literary monuments. In addition, the problem of defining the concept of «forensic profiling» and its differentiation from the concept of «profiling», the main criterion for distinguishing which is the scope of use, is considered. Also, an overview of the advantages of this method is presented (which, we note, are mainly present among researchers studying this topic), but also the disadvantages that law enforcement officers may face when investigating and solving crimes. In addition, it is suggested that the possible further development of «forensic profiling» and its use as a tool to prevent the commission of acts prohibited by current legislation.
