Abstract: 

The article analyses the Russian legislation of modern times concerning the procedure for changing the name at the request of a citizen. The current regulations ensuring broad freedom of changing the name are criticized. The author underlines that this freedom turns into great opportunities for abuse of the right to change the name in order to evade legal duties and for other purposes that do not correspond to the purpose of the right to change the name. The author reveals the reasons why it is necessary to restrict the exercise of the right to change the name at the citizen’s own request.
