Abstract: 

The author examines the understanding of legal progress by the founder of the Ural theory of law school S. S. Alekseev. He analyses the formal (technical and legal) and substantial criteria of legal progress, as well as the main stages of society development and the ideas about social and legal future of mankind proposed by S. S. Alekseev.
