Abstract: 

The article deals with the peculiarities of appeal proceedings in the criminal process of England and Wales, the USA, France and the Russian Federation. This institute is considered through the prism of freedom of appeal, sources of regulation, subjects – persons who have the right to appeal, grounds for appeal, peculiarities of proceedings in the court of appeal, limits of appeal of the sentence, the institute of «turn for the worse», decisions made by the court of appeal, the moment of entry of the sentence into legal force.
