Abstract: 

The author designates the purpose and objectives of the classification of sources for studying the history of political and legal doctrines and identifies the functions of such a classification. The article presents research approaches to classify sources for studying the history of political and legal doctrines, including dialogical, historical-intellectual, historical-biographical, and historical-informational ones. It is proposed to distinguish three levels of sources: sources for studying the creative heritage of the thinker, sources for studying the life and work of the thinker and historiographical sources for studying the history of political and legal thought. Separate types and kinds of sources are considered for each of the levels.
